Help Index
backgrounds.md
To change the background, tap the **User Menu** icon () in the toolbar, then tap **Settings**. Click on **Options** then select your preferred background and tap **Save**. Click on the back arrow () located in the
top left of the screen to return to the desk.
capital.md
To use capitalization, tap the **Capital** icon (**Aa**). The next tile
you pull from the pallet will be capitalized. It will automatically
deactivate after each use.

**Desk Layouts** lets you choose which pallets appear on the desk and how they're organized.
## Access Desk Layouts
- Tap the **User Menu** icon () in the Main Toolbar
- Tap **Settings**
- Select **Desk Layouts**
## Layout Structure
Each desk layout has four parts:
- **Main Pallet** - The primary pallet shown on desk (can be positioned at top, bottom, left, or right)
- **Left Drawer** - Additional pallets shown in the left drawer
- **Right Drawer** - Additional pallets shown in the right drawer
- **Available Pallets** - Both TacTilesPlus pre-built and custom pallets not yet assigned to the layout
## Create a Layout
There are two ways to create a new layout:
### Create a New Custom Layout
1. Tap **New Layout** () to create a blank layout
2. Enter a name for your layout
3. Drag pallets from **Available Pallets** into the desired position in the layout
4. Tap **Save** ()
### Clone any Existing Layout
1. Select a layout from the dropdown to clone
2. Tap **Clone** () to create an editable copy of the layout
3. Customize the cloned layout as desired
4. Tap **Save** ()
## Manage Pallets in a Layout
- **Add Pallets** - Drag pallets from Available Pallets to the desired position in the layout
- **Remove Pallets** - Tap the icon to the right of the pallet icon to return it to Available Pallets
- **Change Main Pallet Position** - Drag a pallet icon () to a new position (Top, Left, Right, or Bottom)
## Set a Default Layout
1. Select the desired layout
2. Tap **Set Default** () to make it the layout when opening TacTilesPlus
## Save and Manage Layouts
- **Save** () - Saves all changes to the selected layout
- **Revert** () - Discards unsaved changes
- **Delete** () - Removes a custom layout (**TacTilesPlus pre-built layouts cannot be deleted**)
> **Note:** Use Pallet Editor for additional pallet customization

The **Desk** is the main workspace where you build words and phrases by dragging tiles from the pallets.
## Working with Tiles
Drag tiles from a pallet onto the desk to build words. Tiles can be moved around the desk by dragging them to a new position.
### Pinned Tiles
Tiles can be pinned to keep them in place. While the **Pin** mode is active, tap a tile to pin it. Pinned tiles stay on the desk when you erase.
### Removing Tiles
Tiles can be removed from the desk by:
- **Toss** - Swipe a tile quickly toward the top of the screen
- **Push** - Push tiles off the edge of the desk
- **Erase** - Tap the **Erase** icon () to remove all unpinned tiles
## Desk Layouts
The desk can be configured with different **Desk Layouts** that determine which pallets are available. Each layout organizes pallets into a main pallet (displayed at the top) and optional left and right drawers. Tap the **Desk Menu** icon () to switch between layouts.
Available layouts include:
- **Alphabet** - Includes the main Alphabet pallet along with prefix, suffix, and specialty pallets in the left and right drawers
- **Phonemic Awareness** - Features the Phonemic Awareness pallet as the main pallet

The **Desk Menu** allows you to switch between different desk layouts. Select between the existing TacTilesPlus built-in and custom desk layouts. Each have a specific set of pallets suited for different lesson types made by the user.
## Switch Desk Layouts
1. Tap the **Desk Menu** icon () in the toolbar
2. Select the desired layout from the menu
3. The desk will update to show the selected layout's pallets
## Available TacTilesPlus Built-In Desk Layouts
### Alphabet
The default layout featuring the **Alphabet** pallet as the main pallet at the top of the desk.
The left drawer contains:

### Phonemic Awareness
Features the **Phonemic Awareness** pallet as the main pallet. This layout is designed for phonemic awareness activities and assessments.
## Desk Layouts in the Desk Menu
Each layout in the desk menu shows the **Pallet Button** for the main pallet. Tap the **Information** icon () to view the **Tip Window** with **Definition** and **Tips** for that pallet.
draw.md
To enable the Draw Tool, tap the **Pencil** icon () in the toolbar, it will turn blue. On the left, the ability to choose colors and an **Eraser** icon () will appear. Now you can write on the desk or
directly on tiles; ie., to mark vowels, to cross out
silent E, to divide words into syllables, and do
any writing tasks. Select and tap your color choice. Use this eraser to delete a small drawing error. To clear all tiles and all drawings off of the desk use the **Erase** icon (), the first icon on the left of the toolbar.
_**Note:** Tapping the **Pencil** icon () will make drawings disappear from desk, but it has not
been erased. Tap the **Pencil** icon () again and the drawing
will reappear. So now one can choose another
color and continue drawing._
_This will allow students to add multiple colors
without losing previous drawings; ie., divide words
in black, mark vowels in yellow, now box off
affixes in green._

Once within a pallet you can:
- Tap the **Information** icon () to view the
**Tip Window** with the pallet’s **Definition** and
**Tips**.
- Scroll within a pallet to view its entire
contents.
- Double-tap on a tile to view its **Usage** in a
word. Some tiles such as morphemes may also include
definitions.
- To capitalize a tile in a pallet, tap the **Capital** (**Aa**)
icon. Drag the capitalized tile to the desk.

**Keyboard Entry** allows you to put tiles on the desk
using your computer keyboard without having to drag
tiles out from pallets.
To activate this feature, tap the **Keyboard** icon ().
As you type your word in the search box, the
app will immediately generate a list of all possible
tile combinations. Click on your preferred pre-built
word to add it to the desk.
To simplify your tile combination options, tap the
**Gear** icon () and
deselect pallets you don’t want to include. You can
also limit the maximum number of tile combinations to
generate.
**Keyboard Entry** is often used in combination
with **Word List Builder** to save your pre-built
words for future use.
lock.md
**Lock** restricts access to the **TacTilesPlus Desk**.
This is primarily designed as a "Teacher Control" mechanism
to help students maintain focus and remain on-task during
a lesson.
To use **Lock**, tap the **Lock** icon () on the toolbar to
disable all functionality. It effectively "freezes" the
app by disabling all tiles, functions and features.
The app will be unresponsive while **Lock** is on.
Simply tap the **Lock** icon () again to unlock the **Desk**.

## Parts of a Pallet
A pallet is made up of several parts that work together:
Pallet
A collection of tiles organized in a grid
Tile Type
Defines how tiles look (font color, background color, opacity)
Tile
An individual letter, number, or symbol placed in the grid
Group
A section within the pallet containing rows of tiles, shown with a black bar at the top — Long vowel sounds with a green box, like pic.
Label
Text element such as column headers that doesn't belong to a tile type
Pallet Button
A button representing a pallet (e.g., P for Prefix, D for Digraphs, VT for Vowel Teams)

Groups organize tiles into sections within a pallet.

Labels are text elements like column headers that aren't tied to a tile type.
1. Tap **Label** in Panel 1
2. Tap an empty cell in Panel 2 to place the label

The Pallet Button is the short label that represents your pallet (e.g., P for Prefix, D for Digraphs, VT for Vowel Teams).

## Add Unique Tiles
Unique tiles have **two uses**. You can put **two tiles** in the same cell position:
1. Drag a tile onto another tile to layer them, in Panel 2
2. On the desk, tap the **Toggle** icon () on the upper-right corner of the tile to see its other use

## Edit a Pallet
1. Tap the **Edit/Complete** icon () in Panel 2 to open Panel 3
2. Edit the pallet name
3. Add a **Definition** and **Tips** for the Tip Window (shown when tapping the Tip Window icon () on the desk)
### Pallet Settings
In Panel 3, you can also set:
- **Disable capitalization** – Turn off capital letters for this pallet
- **Space between columns** – Add extra spacing between columns (e.g., Blends, VT)
- **Snap on drag out** – Let students drag multiple adjacent tiles together (e.g., EIY pallet)

Pallets contain the tiles you can use to build words and phrases on the desk.
There are pallets in both the left and right drawers. Select a **pallet icon** to see the tiles in that pallet.
Each pallet contains a set of tiles with letters, numbers, or symbols that you can drag onto the desk to create words and phrases. The pallet will automatically refill with tiles as you use them.
**Scroll** within a pallet to view its entire contents. **Double-tap** a tile to view example words and definitions when applicable - this helps you "see" how the tile can be used in words.
To access additional pallets:
1. Tap the **Drawer Handle** icon () on either side of the desk
2. Select a pallet icon in the drawer to see its tiles

**Pin** allows you to keep tiles on the desk, even
when you **Erase** the desk.
To activate **Pin**, tap the **Pin** icon () in the toolbar.
It turns light blue. Now tiles may be pinned. While activated,
touching a tile toggles its pinned status. Pinned tiles have
a **Pin** icon () in
the top-right corner.
To deactivate **Pin**, tap the **Pin** icon () in the toolbar again.
snap.md
**Snap** makes tiles move together when they are lined up horizontally.
To activate **Snap**, tap the **Snap** icon () in the toolbar; it will turn blue. Once **Snap** is
activated, tiles lined up horizontally and pushed
together will snap together. This allows all the tiles in the
snapped word to be moved together to another
location on the desk, or to be manually tossed or pushed to
quickly erase the whole word.
Tap the **Snap** icon () again to deactivate **Snap**. Now the previously
snapped word can be pulled apart to divide into syllables
or to fix spelling errors.
stack.md
**Stack** lets you stack tiles on top of other tiles.
Typically, tiles in the app will push or nudge
adjacent tiles when bumped on the desk. To activate
**Stack**, tap the **Stack** icon () in the
toolbar; it will turn blue. Once **Stack** is
activated, you can stack any tiles directly on top
of each other on the desk, including the **Phonemic
Awareness** tiles.
Tap the **Stack** icon () again to
deactivate **Stack**. This enables tiles to push each
other around again.

**Word List Builder** is an important time-saving feature
of **TacTilesPlus**. It allows you to save words in lists
to be used later during lessons. You can create a library
of custom word lists to cover your entire curriculum.
## Create and Save Custom Word Lists
1. In the center of the main toolbar is the **Word List Builder** section. Tap the **Custom Word Lists** icon () to open the **Custom Word Lists Menu**.
1. Name your list then tap **Add**.
_For example: "Lesson 3-5", "Week 1 spelling list", "Rule
K/CK", "Rhyming words", "Short ǎ words", "Suffixes ing/ed"_
1. Manually build your words with tiles or use **Keyboard Entry**
to type the words directly.
1. Tap the **Save** icon () to save each word in your custom list.
1. Use the **Previous Word** icon () and **Next Word** icon () to navigate through your list for sequential practice.
1. To delete a word from the currently selected list, tap the list name in the center of the **Main Toolbar** to open the **List Menu**. Tap the **Delete Word** icon () to remove the word from the list. A pop-up window asks you to confirm the action.
1. To rearrange the words in the currently selected list, tap the list name in the center of the **Main Toolbar** to open the **List Menu**. Tap and drag the **Move Handle** icon () to rearrange the list. Lists save automatically after each rearrange action.
## Use Previously Saved Custom Word Lists
Tap the **Custom Word Lists** icon () and scroll to the desired list; tap to open it.
Use the **Previous Word** icon () and **Next Word** icon () to move through the list.
## Edit the name of a Custom Word List
Tap the **Custom Word Lists** icon () and scroll to the desired list. Tap the **Edit List** icon () on the right to open the **Edit List Window**. Change the name of the list by typing in the input box, then click **Save**.
## Delete a Custom Word List
Tap the **Custom Word Lists** icon () and scroll to the desired list. Tap the **Edit List** icon () on the right to open the **Edit List Window**. Then click the **Delete** icon () to delete the list.
